For Apteligent, a mobile application intelligence solution that helps developers capture a real-time view of app diagnostics and crashes, information is the key to making its customers successful. Its state of the art mobile SDK helps monitor aspects of mobile app performance across every major operating system, carrier, and device around the world.
Through its software, capturing over 100 billion monthly events across 600+ million unique devices, Apteligent believes strongly in delivering actionable mobile app intelligence to enterprises of all sizes. However, the insights that Apteligent delivers are not solely based on the developer's own events. Instead, it helps give its customers a unique perspective of the entire mobile ecosystem.
"We realized that by looking across every device with an Apteligent-powered app, we could understand not only the mobile device ecosystem, but mobile connectivity, too," said Jeremiah Edwards, Head of Data Science & Analytics for Apteligent. Developed initially as a performance management solution for individual apps, Apteligent noticed that their product had provided them a view of mobility that few companies had.
"We had a window into the entire mobile ecosystem, allowing us to identify trends and benchmark data around device, operating system, carrier performance, and more."
All this data brought its own set of challenges around how Apteligent could best store and mine that data for insights. "While we knew that we should be able to access this information, there was no way for us to really make use of it. We didn't have a system that made it easy to discover information. It was like having all the pieces to a jigsaw puzzle, but not knowing what the picture on the puzzle was supposed to look like."
To help manage their data, Jeremiah and his team decided to use Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) as its main data storage. In order to help track and analyze the mobile ecosystem, the Apteligent team utilized Apache Spark to pipe that data from Amazon S3 into an Amazon Redshift Data Warehouse. Once finished, Apteligent had their mobile ecosystem securely locked up in a single box. Now, they just needed an analytics solution to help them unlock it.
"During the course of our search, we had two major requirements. The first was that our eventual analytics solution needed to fit with our stack, specifically Amazon Redshift," said Jeremiah.
"As an Amazon Redshift Partner partner, we knew that Chartio's strong relationship with Amazon meant that Chartio would not only integrate well with Amazon's technology, but that they also had a lot of experience working with Amazon's products. Many of the situations we encounter with our own Redshift instance are already familiar to Chartio's Customer Success team. Having people who work closely with us that are familiar with our situation is a big plus as we continue to push the envelope of what we're doing here."
The second major need revolved around speed. Their analytics solution needed to be able to keep up with Apteligent's internal demand for insights. "We have terabytes of information about each carrier, device, software, and their related events. Because it's broad, It's easy to spend an hour or two diving into an analysis that doesn't result in anything. The more exploration we can do, the faster we can find new insights to leverage. Ultimately, we needed something that would enable us to create a large volume of analysis in a variety of ways as quickly as possible." Jeremiah and his team were impressed by Chartio's Visual Explorer, and the speed and flexibility by which it allowed them to analyze their data.
"With Chartio, we didn't have to worry about knowing what we were going to analyze before we started. With its Data Pipeline, Chartio enables us to quickly combine data together and play with it in order to understand large trends, relationships between metrics, and more. This allows us to really dig for insights as opposed to just monitoring something we already know," said Jeremiah.
With Chartio, we didn't have to worry about knowing what we were going to analyze before we started.
"Once we find something that's worth sharing, we can quickly turn it into a compelling visualization, and send it to the rest of the team. As we begin to identify new metrics we want to track globally, we can add it to our schema within Chartio to let anyone else use it moving forward."
Since working with Chartio, Apteligent has continued to increase their collective understanding of the mobile ecosystem. Apteligent's Customer Success team was able to begin taking advantage of this information to help their own customers. "Once we began to discover trends within the mobile ecosystem, we started leveraging it to help our customers become better at managing their app performance. We ended up discovering this information we had was highly sought after," said Jeremiah.

Apteligent recently unveiled a new business product, Apteligent Global Device Directory. The Apteligent team was able to turn the work they did within Chartio into an entirely new source of revenue for the company.
Within the company itself, people's relationship to data was changing. "Chartio began to spread virally within the company. As we began to show more people the insights that we were discovering, the more they saw Chartio and, the more they wanted to use it themselves. It's now being used in ways that I never would have imagined before."
Andrew Levy, Co-Founder and Chief Strategy Officer, sees Chartio as an essential part of his work life. "Before using Chartio, I had to manually pull reports and information for our business partners. When I first saw Chartio, I thought that it could help us reduce a lot of that engineering overhead."
"Now, I no longer have to bug them for help. I can create custom individual reports for my partners in a matter of minutes, saving our engineering team hours every month."
Today, Chartio is used daily within Apteligent across a number of cross-functional teams including Analytics/Data Science, Marketing, Business Development, Support, and Sales.
As Jeremiah puts it, "Chartio continues to help Apteligent evolve as we unlock more insights throughout our business. I can't begin to comprehend how different things would be without it."
