How Real-Time Health Data Powers CareLinx’s Caregiver Network

Case Study

About CareLinx

CareLinx is the world’s first and only online nationwide network for in-home care, helping match vetted caregivers with the patients who need them.

Yeong-Ping Koh had two challenges.

As VP of Product at CareLinx, he wanted to keep his engineers focused on doing what they do best—building a world-class product that helps connect aging seniors with a network of over 300,000 in-home caregivers.

But as is the case at many companies, CareLinx engineers were frequently being asked to query data and generate reports to support other teams—an important function, but not the best use of their valuable time.

So, challenge #1: finding a way to let everyone within CareLinx explore the company’s data on their own so that engineers could get back to the business of product development.

We wanted the engineers to focus on the product, so it was important for us to find a Business Intelligence platform that allows everyone to pull metrics and insights on their own. We wanted something everyone can play around with instead of having a dedicated team pulling data and creating reports.

But Koh faced an additional challenge.

CareLinx is the leading nationwide network for in-home care, improving access to affordable, quality home care for families with aging loved ones. The company also partners up with hospitals, health plans, and senior facilities who want quality homecare for their members and patients. As such, CareLinx interacts with lots of protected health information (PHI). So, any data solution used at CareLinx would need to satisfy industry requirements for security and privacy in accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

Fortunately, Chartio—a product already being used at CareLinx to handle non-PHI data—recently announced that it had achieved HIPAA compliance, and both of Koh’s challenges were solved.

The evolution of data at CareLinx

Before finding Chartio in 2016, CareLinx had been using a combination of pgAdmin and Google Sheets to manage their data.

This solution quickly proved inadequate. Because the tools weren’t easy enough for non-technical users, data access within CareLinx was limited to just a few engineers using specific computers in the office. And those engineers were frequently getting sidetracked pulling data reports for the rest of the team.

To mitigate these problems, CareLinx started looking for BI products that could help drive their business forward. While price was one factor in deciding which product to choose, CareLinx also wanted to find a platform that could grow with the company.

They briefly considered Looker, one of the few products that addressed HIPAA. But it soon became clear that implementing Looker would require significant time and effort from their engineers to let all employees take advantage of its features, making it an unviable solution. They evaluated other BI solutions as well, including Tableau, Klipfolio, and Geckoboard, before deciding to go with Chartio.

At the time, Chartio was an effective solution for CareLinx’s non-PHI data needs. But with their increased focus on the health partner business, CareLinx would soon need a BI solution that could handle PHI, too.

Fortunately, Chartio recently achieved HIPAA compliance, meaning CareLinx could simply expand its Chartio usage to include PHI.

“It is really important for us that we can now have PHI in Chartio,” Koh said.

Chartio’s HIPAA compliance means that CareLinx can expand its adoption throughout the company and improve efficiencies across different teams.

For example, CareLinx wanted to have a complete picture of the health partners they work with. Thanks to Chartio’s HIPAA compliance, instead of filtering out all the PHI before connecting to Chartio, teams can now directly connect the data in real-time, ensuring the efficient flow of information across the teams.

With Chartio being HIPAA compliant, there’s less risk involved. Everyone can access real-time data, and we are excited to use it with Chartio’s embedding feature.

— Yeong-Ping, VP of Product at CareLinx

Today, Chartio is used across all the teams at CareLinx – Engineering, Product, Operations and Customer Success. While Engineering and Product are the primary creators of the charts, Ops and Customer Success teams utilize Chartio charts on a daily basis to manage clients.

Now that Chartio is HIPAA compliant, CareLinx’s daily functions have become more efficient and easier.

It is important for growing companies to be aligned on metrics and goals in a consistent and timely manner. Chartio helped us by enabling everyone in the company to be on the same page.
