As CEO, you are constantly trying to make your company more efficient and profitable. That means ensuring your team is not misusing resources by working on the right things as well as having access to information to make more effective decisions.

We sat down with NYSHEX CEO, Gordon Downes, SVP of Engineering, Arjun Anand, and Lead Engineer, Matt Rosenberg, to hear how they have implemented a data stack that has their team running more efficiently.

We needed a solution so that I, along with the rest of the team, could explore data on the fly.

Describe your experience before using Chartio. What was the problem you were facing?

Gordon: Before using Chartio we were manually extracting data from our application and various other cloud apps into Excel. Not only was this process time consuming, but only a few people in the company could access the data. This meant that in order for me to get the information I needed, I’d have to go through the engineering team.

There had to be a better way to make information more readily available and save time for our engineering team. We needed a solution so that I, along with the rest of the team, could explore data on the fly.

Arjun: Yes, while we were able to automate a large portion of the ETL process and some of the reports, each request was still taking time away from active development.

What were your requirements for a BI solution?

Arjun: We wanted to get data out in a fast manner without going through engineering. We also wanted to give the entire company more flexibility into digging into our data.

That being said, our main requirements were ease of use, fast set-up and a quick turnaround for non-engineers.

I didn’t want a tool that would take a long time to implement or have non-developers learning different languages.

Chartio has power but is also executive-ready. To have such a flexible tool is really cool. Relative to what I have worked with in the past, it is just so refreshing.

Why did you decide to use Chartio?

Arjun: The selection process was straightforward.

In Chartio you can get easily access all data and explore and manipulate any way you like. Getting up and running was fast and our entire team could use it.

Gordon expected it was going to take a month and a huge budget to implement a Business Intelligence tool, but with Chartio it only took a day to get everything going and then a week to get the initial dashboards to show what we could accomplish.

Gordon: My expectations were absolutely blown out the water.

What does your current data infrastructure look like?

Arjun: Chartio connects to:

  • A MySQL database which holds most of our application data
  • A PostgreSQL database that has microservices connections
  • Our Google Analytics account and CSVs from Clicky, our contracting system
  • Our hosted Fivetran BigQuery data warehouse that stores Hubspot data

Which teams use Chartio - how do they use it?

Arjun: The entire company. Chartio has improved overall customer experience and time savings across the company.

One instance of a team using Chartio is with our trade team managers. They look at trading activity on the exchange and can see alerts that come through the system in Chartio. Our trade teams are now able to see how the trade is performing on the exchange and can act faster than ever.

Chartio gets information to the people who need it so they can make decisions without taking loads of time.

What is your favorite Chartio feature?

Gordon: I love that you can simply create a report once, then set it up to automatically send future reports directly to yourself, or even external stakeholders.

Matt: The ability to traverse between basic and advanced mode is seamless. The basic explorer is so simple that I feel confident anyone can drag and drop the data they need. And additionally, if certain relationships can’t be drawn in the basic visual explorer, then the advanced mode is available with all the flexibility needed. Having this range of intuitive interfaces in our hands makes it both accessible and powerful, all at the same time.

Gordon: Chartio provides data to the people, it really allows us to democratize data across the company. Chartio gets information to the people who need it so they can make decisions without taking loads of time. It’s an awesome tool, we’re really happy with it.
