At Reddit, one of the world’s largest open source online communities, users are constantly contributing to Reddit communities by adding new content, commenting, and upvoting stories and discussions they find interesting. This creates terabytes of data that Reddit needs to quickly and easily analyze. By using Chartio, everyone in Reddit has access to their data. This has enabled them to dig deep into user interactions, free up the data team to do more in-depth data discovery and as a result, increase sales.

The Challenge: Data Bottleneck

Before Chartio, there were many one-off data requests that took the data team’s time away from other projects.

“We were spending a tremendous amount of time handling ad hoc requests, answering a lot of the same questions. It was time consuming and tedious and those requesting data couldn’t go deeper into their analytics without help.” says Justin Bassett, Data Analyst at Reddit.

Reddit needed to visualize engagement data across the organization – including non-technical staff – so the teams could get greater insights into user interactions and make feature decisions faster.

Reddit started building out their data infrastructure while they researched data visualization solutions, including Chartio.

“The main thing that lead us to Chartio was the low barrier of entry not only because of the price but because it connected to our MySQL database as well as our other data sources such as Google Analytics and it was one of the best tools we saw that blended those sources so easily.”

Reddit’s requirements were to find a low cost, scaleable solution that was flexible and could connect to their data infrastructure which consists of EC2, Kafka, Mesos, s3, Hive and a MySQL database.

“Chartio easily fit our requirements. We put together our data infrastructure intentionally and purposefully to allow us to spend as little time as possible in maintaining things and instead focusing on digging deeper into our data.”

The Application: Using Chartio for Outbound Success

Reddit’s sales team is one of the most active teams using Chartio today.

“Our sales teams are constantly creating dashboards to share with prospects on the potential of advertising with Reddit. We are able to tell them how people are talking about their brands or products, where those users are located and give them sentiment analysis of the discussions around their brand within our various subreddits.”

Reddit analyzes their comment threads in Chartio using Google BigQuery which enables their sales team to query across a huge data set in real time to find how a product or brand is being talked about within the community.

“We create a beautiful illustration of where the product is mentioned that brands really care about. Since starting to use these dashboards our sales have increased dramatically.”

A Simple Solution: Empowering everyone to perform ad-hoc queries

“Chartio showed us its value instantly. Our data was available on Chartio right away, allowing us to easily make dashboards that compelled people to actually engage with their data.”

Reddit didn’t originally plan on having everyone use Chartio however, they kept getting requests from employees to be able to query data on their own. “People were beating down our doors to get access. Charito’s drag and drop interface makes querying easy, and the product is simple to learn so it made sense to spend the short time teaching them how to engage with their data in Chartio, allowing them to be responsible for answering their own questions.”

“With Chartio we are making data analysis fun and accessible again,” says Justin.

By offloading the ad hoc analysis the data team now has more time for in depth exploration like how to better fight spam or how their AMAs are promoting user interaction. “Chartio lets me easily visualize results and hone in on the most important ones, prompting me to ask the right questions each month. Chartio provides insights in a clear and concise way for everyone in the company to understand and take action on.”

Everyone in the company shares their dashboards to answer their own questions without duplicating the work. “More people are making discoveries and uncovering answers they couldn’t have found on their own before.”
