How to use the pivot step

Data Pipeline

If you’re unable to generate a bar or line chart from your query, it’s possible your data isn’t in the proper format. If your data has a column grouped by multiple dimensions, you will need to pivot your data to generate new columns that group the data into categories. This will allow you to create a bar or line chart with each category as a separate grouping.

As an example, let’s say you want to create a bar chart out of the data you queried below.

The error message points out that with the way the data is currently formatted, a bar chart cannot be generated. Adding a pivot step will resolve this issue. It’ll pivot the data on the second column to turn each Description into a new column.

To pivot the data, all you need to do is click on the “Add Transformation” button and select Pivot Data. Once you add the pivot step, you can see how your data is transformed.

Now you can generate a stacked bar chart.
