Chartio migration checklist

We’ve condensed the main tasks discussed in each section of our migration tips and tricks into checklists for you to reference throughout your migration process. Keep this checklist handy to track your progress and next steps for each area of your Chartio instance you’ll need to audit and migrate.

1. Dashboard Cleanup and Usage Statistics

Use Dashboard Cleanup to bulk archive unnecessary dashboards

Inspect number of dashboards or charts created or last edited per data source connection

Review scheduled reports frequency per dashboard

Create a list of necessary and actively used dashboards and charts

2. Data sources

2a. Data Stores

Identify Stored Tables to rebuild

Export Stored Table pipeline logic (optional)

Contact Chartio support for an overview of Stored Table usage, if needed

Look for similar Data Store features in your new BI solution or build in your data warehouse

2b. CSVs

Identify important dashboards querying CSVs

If you don't have access to the CSV files, export the data out of Chartio

Append exported files if the data contains more than 100,000 rows (optional)

Import file in data warehouses or connect file to your new BI solution if this functionality is available

2c. Custom tables and columns

Identify if your sources contain custom tables or custom columns

Rebuild custom tables and columns in your next BI solution if they're still needed

3. Prioritize then categorize dashboards

Create priority categories for your dashboards

Reach out to your users to decide on the dashboard's category

Assign a priority category to each dashboard

Refer to the Rebuild in a new BI solution checklist for recreating your dashboards

4. Teams, users, and permissions

Export list of users and their metadata

Contact Chartio support for custom user/permission reports, if needed

Ask users for important or necessary features to consider in a new BI solution

Map permissions to your new BI solution

Apply permissions to new dashboards and data sources

Audit permissions once migrations is complete

5. Embedded dashboards

Use the Usage Statistics page to see which dashboards have embedding enabled and have had embedding views in the last three months

Identify where dashboards are currently being embedded

Contact dashboard admins or primary admins to confirm embedding locations, if needed

Identify which embedded dashboards need to be migrated to your new solution

Verify that your new solution's embedding functionality meets your use case

Update the source code of your webpages where dashboards are embedded to use your new solution's embedding format

6. Email Reports

Identify the dashboards that are sent as reports

Note the recipients for each report

Note the customizations for each report (e.g., frequency, date, time, customized Control values)

Categorize the reports by priority

Recreate the reports in your new BI solution

7. Alerts

Inventory your organization's existing Alerts

Reach out to Chartio support for extra Alert information, if needed

Decide which Alerts are no longer needed and which Alerts are still important to keep

Reach out to the individual Alert admins as appropriate

Migrate your Chartio Alerts to your new solution

8. Rebuild in a new BI solution

Complete the previous checklists to ensure you're ready to begin rebuilding your dashboards and other elements in your new BI solution.

Open Chartio in a browser tab, begin with opening one of the highest priority dashboards first

Open your new BI solution in a second browser tab. Have both the Chartio tab and this tab open side-by-side if possible; otherwise, flip between the two.

Proceed with mapping over your Chartio dashboards, from highest to lowest priority, over to your new BI solution

Check for remaining charts using a data source before disconnecting the data source from Chartio
